Gynecomastia is a condition of overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men. The condition may be caused by hormonal changes, heredity, obesity or the use of certain drugs or medications.
Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and social anxiety.
Gynecomastia can include one or more of the following:
- Excess localized fat
- Excess glandular tissue
- Excess breast skin
- Presence unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts)
Gynecomastia surgery can also be combined with liposuction to help contour and flatten the chest.
In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases, the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin can be reduced.
